Disjunctor Selection for One-Line Jokes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Here we present a model of a subtype of one-line jokes (not puns) that describes the relationship between the connector (part of the setup) and the disjunctor (often called the punchline). This relationship is at the heart of what makes this common type of joke humorous. We have implemented this model in a system, DisS (Disjunctor Selector), which, given a joke set-up, can select the best disjunctor from a list of alternatives. DisS agrees with human judges on the best disjunctor for one typical joke, and we are currently testing it on other jokes of the same sub-type.

We describe the space structuring model, a model of language comprehension inspired by ideas in cognitive linguistics, focusing on its capacity to explain the sorts of inferences needed to understand one-line jokes. One process posited in the model is frame-shifting, semantic and pragmatic reanalysis in which elements of the existing message-level representation are mapped into a new frame retr...

Joke comprehension deficits in patients with right hemisphere (RH) damage raise the question of the role of the intact RH in understanding jokes. One suggestion is that semantic, or meaning, activations are different in the RH and LH, and RH meanings are particularly important for joke comprehension. To assess whether hypothesized differences in semantic activation in the two hemispheres were r...

Joke comprehension has been decomposed into surprise registration followed by a coherence stage, involving frameshifting (retrieving a new frame from long-term memory to reinterpret information in working memory). We examined this view by recording event-related brain potentials (ERPs) from adults reading one-line jokes or non-joke controls with equally unexpected endings. Joke and non-joke ERP...
متن کاملResearching Humor on the Internet
Collecting jokes on the Internet is becoming more and more useful, and one might say even unavoidable. The renewed nature of jokes (short, electronically distributed in addition to oral circulation, some jokes created only for electronic media (see Ellis 2001) etc) requires renewed methods for collecting and processing the data. Further than that, the Estonian Internet has some special advantag...
